Glue your face to a guide or two until you start getting comfortable doing basic things. It's basically wastage of all the other resources you would've otherwise been able to dig out of that embark tile (a minimum of down to the first cavern layer) for some convenience that isn't quite as necessary if you manufacture at least 1 magma-safe minecart, & a return route you can use to pull some magma up to where you want your forges.ĭon't let yourself get overwhelmed. It will spawn hostile wildlife (magma-crabs, imps, etcetera).

If you can include a Volcano & running water (Brook, Stream, River) in your embark, you can literally "Farm" Obsidian, which is a magma-safe economic stone with a base value of 5 dorfbucks (sorry, don't know how to type the character), & which can even be used for below-bottom-tier swords (they're ok if your hunters are going to melee their kills, or for early defence against kobolds, but that's about it).Ī Volcano & Sand is nearly unlimited glass which is sort-of-magma-safe (buildings & furniture will be fine, pots & stuff in stockpiles under magma, not so much), while Clay instead of sand makes for cheap pottery (especially if you have Fire Clay & don't need to glaze your pots). Practice with channelling and removing slopes around a walled off courtyard, probably doesn't matter if you use wood for the first walls, once you get the hang of funnelling everything through one route, it makes it easier to make rows of traps, and ofc catching all the sneaky ways the ai can path into your fort. the layers of nuance get easier to manage the more you play. most forts succumb to some fun eventually, trying to maintain that happy equilibrium is challenging. I've played for 100s of hours and i've only just got my first fort all the way to capital, it was likely due to the low hostility and almost no sieges but its been a long time coming to get this far. I try to start on making it difficult to get in early, then you can secure a small courtyard with a moat + wall and drawbridge, significantly increases your chances of surviving the first invasion.Įmbarking on maps with flux stone, shallow and deep metals also gives you more crafting options. When I embark I try to pick a map with a river running through it, so you always have fish and water, which you can siphon off into a moat.
